Authentic Bhutanese cuisine

Bhutan, just like many other countries and many different landscapes, it's cuisine is just as different and impressive and every region is known for its speciality. Dairy foods such as butter and cheese from yaks and cows, are very popular. A lot of meat and poultry like chicken, pork, beef, goat, mutton and yak as well as fish is consumed. They are usually served in the form of stews/curries (tshoem), with wide variety of fresh vegetables in it and spices such as cardamom, ginger, caraway and turmeric. All meals are complemented by white rice (ha chum) or pink-red rice (eue chum), both steamed or boiled. Besides rice buckwheat and maize are also used.
There is one thing very typical about Bhutanese cuisine. It is that the Bhutanese people love spicy food. They love chilies and they are not considered to be a seasoning but a valuable vegetable. So the traditional Bhutanese food is spiced with both dried or fresh red/green chilies. If you happen to visit Bhutan, you should definitely try our national dish which ema datsi. It is a dish consisting of chili known as ema and cheese known as datsi.
